Project Droplet
Project Droplet
Welcome to Project Droplet
We are building a solar powered drone boat that will sail around the world fully autonomously. Follow this incredible journey through live-streamed videos from across the planet via Starlink.
FoLLOW OUR JOURNEY
There is no beginning or end, only updates and reminders to check in with how Droplet is doing.
Who are we?
We are a ragtag bunch of founders from the Waterloo-Toronto area. Sid and Kelly are co-founders of Liquid Energy, an energy storage startup. Karan is the founder of ECOICE, an industrial decarbonization company.
We are supported by a brain trust of colleagues and friends with backgrounds in robotics, autonomous vehicles, computer vision, mechanical engineering, electronics, marketing, and content creation.
The inspiration
We were inspired by Andrew McCalip’s Project Bob and decided that it would be incredible fun to race Andrew’s boats with our own and try to outrun him with better tech and clever hacks.
The plan
The location
Droplet is set to depart from the coast of Los Angeles in January 2025. From LA it will embark on a 300 day journey around the world, live-streaming video and sensor data through a Starlink Mini to share its adventure with millions of viewers.
The goal of this campaign is to demonstrate the elegance and simplicity of solar energy.

Droplet is a solar powered drone boat that will autonomously circumnavigate the oceans. This incredible journey will be live-streamed from across the planet using Starlink. While several teams have attempted similar feats with varying success, we hope to do it within a $10,000 budget.
-
We were inspired by Andrew McCalip's Project Bob. We think it's a great engineering challenge to build such a boat within a $10k budget.
We want to race his Bob boats with our Droplets around the world! In doing that, we hope to squeeze every ounce of solar energy available and make every Watt go very far.
Our mission is to demonstrate the reliability and affordability of solar energy.
-
For each $10K we raise, we will build and launch one extra boat. All the contributions from the crowdfunding campaign will be used exclusively to cover the costs of parts, equipment, experiments, and logistics.
All of the time spent by the Project Droplet team is entirely volunteered. None of the people involved will draw an income or profit from this project.
We want to have incredible fun racing Andrew McCalip's Project Bob boats and ensure that each Droplet is ready for its epic journey.
Droplet is an off-grid, solar powered drone boat, but each $10K will allow us to build a Droplet with different configurations, experimental technologies, and send them out on interesting trajectories around the world.

We’re looking for talented volunteer engineers who want to be part of this exciting project. If you’ve got the skills and the passion, we’d love to have you on board! We’re also seeking companies interested in sponsoring or partnering with us to push the boundaries of our technology.
-
If you want your logo on the boat or other cool perks like in-person events, social media mentions, and even more extensive campaign opportunities, get in touch with us! The minimum sponsorship starts at $5K, and we can customize a package that fits your goals.

We want to say something fancy like "each little Droplet is a clean energy and AI-powered agent of change and we need many many Droplets to create a sea change in the world".
But really, Droplet is the name of an alien spaceship in the Three Body Problem sci-fi books. In the books (minor spoiler alert) the Droplet is a perfectly droplet-shaped elegant little interstellar probe. It initially looks like a work of art, but it very quickly reveals itself to be indestructable and unimaginably powerful. It is animated by an onboard superintelligent AI.
So, you know, there are similarities - our Droplet is also self powered (by solar energy), unsinkable, and has an onboard AI. We are huge Three Body nerds and since Andrew McCalip named his boat project Bob, with a sci-fi reference, we didn't wanna lose an opportunity to do our own scifi reference.
